Northside Church of Christ

Welcome to Northside! We desire to LOVE GOD with all of our hearts, LOVE OTHERS as Christ loves us, and to SERVE THE WORLD through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Missions & Community Service

Jon Etcheson

Servant Group Leader
Jesus commissioned us to LOVE GOD, LOVE OTHERS AND SERVE THE WORLD.  He commanded us to   "...go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matthew 28: 19-20)

This group seeks ways to make this commission a reality. Northside supports the Jenkins Family in Chicago, IL working with the English based church with a good children’s and youth program for returning Diaspora of East Africa. Northside also supports numerous community services in our area.

The Jenkins missionary work is one sent by the Holy spirit for the purpose of making disciples, developing churches, and ushering greater kingdom influence into a new cultural context. One of the contemporary waves of the Holy Spirit are the Diaspora coming to the mission field in the United Sates.

A little over 20 years ago the Jenkins family landed in Kampala, Uganda to begin mission work.

In 1993 Churches of Christ and the Christian Church had not had a missionary presence in Uganda in 21 years. Eleven years later 55 missionary family units had entered Uganda, and the handful of churches had grown to 177 local congregations.

Then they entered Rwanda to follow a dream that Rwanda’s Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Angelina Muganza had placed before them.  With God’s help could they plant an English based church with a good children’s and youth program for returning Diaspora? The Lord answered, “Yes.” Yet, He had more for them than anticipated. Their community started Kigali International Community School (KICS.) They were participants in helping over 300 of Rwanda’s brightest students attend university in the Presidential Scholars program.

A little over one year ago they landed in Chicago, Illinois, to begin a new journey. They are back to the beginning steps done in other church plants. They have begun meeting with African Diaspora community leaders through a monthly meal and conversation to begin a larger Great Lakes Fellowship (GLF). They plan to have the fellowship in local churches to facilitate local church’s understanding of the Diaspora and  to rotate the fellowship so that scattered Diaspora can have an opportunity at least quarterly to easily attend. The fellowship lasts about 4 hours and includes a time to gather, African worship, practical teaching nurturing transitions, communion, and a shared meal. From these fellowships they are asking for the Lord to develop a core team for a new multi-cultural church plant on Chicago’s north side.

Community Service

Jesus also said to " ...Love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12: 31)

The Missions & Community Service Servant Group helps in serving people in our community and instills a deep conviction and enthusiasm within the group and others in the congregation so that we may serve and love as Jesus did. The primary focus is going among those in need, seeking activities that will provide the best opportunities for us to share our faith as we serve.

Northside and its members support and serve many organizations in our community, including:
Midwest Food Bank, Home Sweet Home Mission, The Baby Fold, Habitat for Humanity, Western Ave. Community Center, Christian Counseling Services  and more.

Current Needs and Opportunities

The Baby Fold needs volunteers to assist in their major fundraising event "Festival of Trees" held in November.  Contact Julie Payne at (309) 451-7202  or on the  web at http://www.thebabyfold.org/Volunteer_Opportunities.html

The Midwest Food Bank always appreciates help during their load out week. For more information contact the food bank at 309-663-5350 or www.midwestfoodbank.org or see Larry Sharp.

Habitat for Humanity, welcomes people from all walks of life to join them as they build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with God and families in need. Though the vast majority has no construction experience or building skills, volunteers are involved in most phases of construction. By working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, our volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership. Habitat volunteers contribute more than muscle. Creativity, strategy, and technical skills are among the many invaluable traits volunteers bring to the organization. With a minimal staff, Habitat for Humanity of McLean County depends upon volunteer committees for support with projects like Fundraising, Family Selection, Family Support, Public Relations, Construction Skills Training, and Volunteer Services. We also offer opportunities in our Habitat ReStore, a volunteer-run building materials recycling center.

Faith in Action is looking for Volunteer Friends for persons 55+ to assist elderly in shopping, go for friendly visits, make friendly phone calls, or provide transportation to medical/non-medical appointments in Bloomington-Normal.

marcfirst needs volunteers to help maintain yards by trimming bushes, removing limbs, weeding flower beds, planting and applying mulch. No mowing required. Call Dave Altshue at 275-2704.
